Is a Square Tube or Round Tube Trailer Hitch Stronger

Question:

What's the structural advantage of a square tube hitch over a round tube hitch for carrying my bike rack? I've got a 2018 Nissan Murano

Technically speaking a square tube hitch has less chance of twisting than a round tube. This is why all of the heavier rated hitches for large trucks are squre. With that being said either style is designed and tested to meet certain specifications and rated as such. So regardless of which you're using as long as you stay within its specifications the hitch should handle the load.

For your 2018 Nissan Murano both hitches are round tube hitches; Curt # C13205 and Draw-Tite # 75952. To carry a bike rack I recommend the Draw-Tite. One of the main factors in determining the better hitch for a bike rack is the distance the hitch pin hole is under the vehicle's bumper. The further the hole is under the bumper the more clearance is required by the bike rack. The Draw-Tite hitch's pin hole is 2 inches closer to the rear bumper than the Curt's, giving you that much more clearance for your bike rack from the Murano's bumper.

Also, the Curt requires a stabilization strap, part # 18050, when using the hitch to carry a bike rack.

I've linked an installation video on both hitches, as well as a video that compares the two of them side by side for you to look at.
