Recommended 5/8 Inch Hitch Pins for Mounting Lunette Ring in C-Channel Coupler

Question:

Hi, On my current trailer the lunette ring is bolted with two 5/8 inch bolts and nylock nuts to the c-channel that is welded to the trailer. I need to replace the lunette ring as it is excessively worn. Is there a reason why I have to bolt the lunette ring into the c-channel? Why can I not just use two 5/8 inch hitch pins? Looking at all the adjustable ball hitches I see the same type of geometry using basically hitch pins to hold the ball in the c-channel instead of nuts and bolts. Thanks

For the Buyers Products Zinc Plated 10-Ton Forged Steel Lunette Ring w/ 3" I.D. # 337B16140Z you are correct that the 5/8 inch bolts are traditionally used for the C-channel. This is partially because the bolts are normally 5-1/2 inches long. The standard pins are simply not long enough in most cases and the lunette ring is not tested for use with these pins so you'd most likely be outside of the manufacturer's warranty.

The usable pin length of the Curt 3 inch receiver hitch pin # C21507 is 4-3/4 inches, so it will be more similar to the bolts and should work for your C-channel mount which is 3-1/2 inches outside to outside.
