Recommended Roof Cargo Box for 42 Inch Crossbar Spread on 2010 Mazda CX-9
Question:
I believe the minimum crossbar spread of the fixed mounting points on a Mazda CX 9 is 42inch using the middle and the front positions. Not many cargo boxes are able to handle 42inch crossbar spread typically adjust from 23-36inch only. I know Thule Motion XL is able to adjust up to 42, but was wondering what other boxes I may want to consider preferably in a lower- cost category. best -

Based on my research, it does look like you are correct that the minimum crossbar spread on your 2010 Mazda CX-9 using the fixed mounting points will be around 42 inches. We only have a few cargo boxes available that are compatible with this large of a spread.
The most economical box we have that will work with up to a 42 inch crossbar spread is the Yakima SkyBox 12 # Y07334. This cargo box provides 12 cubic feet of space and a dual-side-opening lid that allows you to load/unload cargo from either side of your CX-9. It works with a crossbar spread of 24 to 42 inches.
If you need a bit more space, both the Yakima SkyBox 18 (18 cubic feet of space) # Y07336 and SkyBox 21 (21 cubic feet of space) # Y07337 will also work with up to a 42 inch crossbar spread.
The Thule Motion XT boxes like # TH629706 that you referenced are actually only compatible with crossbar spreads of up to 36-7/8 inches, so they will not work for your application.
If you are still looking for a roof rack, I recommend the Rhino-Rack Aero Bar system for a sturdy, but economical option. This system includes # RRVA126B-2 for the two 49 inch Bars, # RRRLKVA for the 2500 Series Legs, and # DK289 for the Custom DK Fit Kit.
I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on these products that you can also check out.
