Trailer Wiring and Hitch Recommendation for a 1999 jeep Wrangler
Question:
You have two different light hookups for a 1999 Jeep Wrangler. Code: 42615 and Code: 118409. One hooks to both sides of Jeep and the other one hooks up only on passenger side? Why is the reasoning for this and what is the best to use? Wanting to install hitch, but a bit confused!!! : o

Basically, there are 2 different ways on which you can install trailer wiring on a 1999 Jeep Wrangler. The Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118409, plugs in line with the wiring behind the vehicle tail lights. Installation may take a little longer than the other harness but these types of connections are popular and work well. I have included a link to the installation details and a video showing a typical installation for you.
The Hopkins Harness, # 42615, plugs into a connector that carries all of the functions located underneath the Jeep Wrangler, on the passengers side, behind the rear tire mud flap. You can check that location on your Jeep to make sure it is there.
Both wiring harnesses have a separate ground wire that will need to be attached to a clean metal surface.
For a trailer hitch the most popular option for your vehicle is the CURT Trailer Hitch, # 13408. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation. If you plan on doing some towing, I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin and clip, and a carrying bag.
