What Typically Causes Trailer Sway

Question:

Not sure how to calculate tongue weight. Trailer weight dry is 6700 pounds. I have a weight distribution hitch and a sway bar but still have some sway, not nearly as bad as before the sway bar. If I add another sway bar to opposite side does it mater if it’s upside down. Or do they make left right bars. My truck is a 2018 f150 145 inch wheel base 4 by 4 v8 5 liter 3:73 rear end. Is it that my truck can’t pull the trailer? Any help would be greatly appreciated I very new to all this and want my family to be safe. Thank you

Weight distribution and sway control can do a great job minimizing sway caused by high winds and passing semi trucks but it won't prevent persistent sway like what you are describing.

What fixes is that is improved trailer loading and making sure the trailer is as level as possible.

You want to make sure your tongue weight is between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight and you'll be set. Most likely you need to get more weight forward in the trailer as that's the root cause of almost all trailer sway.

We have the scale part # e99044 which will allow you to measure the tongue weight of your trailer as well.
