Replacement Trailer Brake Controller for Malfunctioning Hayes Controller in 2006 Dodge Ram
Question:
I have a Hayes brake controller on an 06’ dodge truck and it started acting up. It flashes the truck brake lights, drained the battery, flashes the OC code along with an 88 code sometimes. I can hear it clicking when I drive with no trailer connected and it flashes the OC code. I don’t know if it’s the controller or the truck.

Helpful Expert Reply:
If your Hayes trailer brake controller is misbehaving this much I do suspect it has suffered internal damage and should be replaced. The combination of these different symptoms, but especially the drain on your Ram's battery, suggests a major internal fault.
Our customers' experience with brake controllers leads us to often recommend products from Tekonsha, such as their Prodigy P2 # 90885 and their superb P3 # 90195. These controllers are feature-packed, reliable and generally easier to use. You can read customer reviews of both of these excellent products on their respective pages.
If your Ram has a factory-installed 7-way trailer connector you can easily install a Prodigy controller just using the simple wiring adapter # 3020-P which provides a plug-and-play installation at the port under your dash.
