Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for Bike Rack on 2008 Subaru Outback

Thanks, as a follow-up to Jasons QandA... Looking at my 2008 Outback, I dont want to go with the Curt Class II, since it requires a stabilization strap for bikes which the Outback doesnt have anywhere to mount the straps. Thus, I am looking at: Curt Class III Draw-Tite Class II Draw-Tite Class III I know that the class IIIs have more product options. However, I am concerned about three other things: - is there a tighter clearance moving up to Class III? - does clearance vary between Curt and Draw-Tite? - load stability - does anyone notice a difference in terms of how much the bikes sway between a class II vs a class III? You are correct that Curt requires the stabilization strap # 18050 on many of their hitches when using a bike rack or other accessory. This does interfere with the spoiler on your 2008 Outback if you run it to the top of the hatch, so I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III # 75560 which not only is a stronger hitch that will also allow for more accessory options, but also does not require that strap.

You will want to pay attention to the 6 inch measurement from center of hitch pin to rearmost part of the bumper. Each bike rack will give you a measurement from that hitch pin hole to ensure you have a fit for the clearance needed on your vehicle.

Good questions. There is slightly less ground clearance on the Class III hitch simply due to the larger opening. The Draw-Tite Class III # 75560 has a measurement from the ground to the upper inside opening of the receiver of 13-1/2 inches and pin hole to outer bumper measurement of 6 inches. The Draw-Tite Class II # 36334 has the exact same clearances, so it will have a slightly different ground clearance with the 2 inch Class III hitch being about 1-1/2 inches lower to the ground once you add the larger opening and the collar. The Curt Class II # C12284 hasn't been measured on your vehicle and there is not a Curt Class III option at this time. It does require the stability strap # 18050. My recommendation of the Draw-Tite # 75560 is still what I believe to be your best option as it gives you the same bumper clearances as the 1-1/4 inch hitch options and it will be much more stable with less bike and rack movement due to stronger receiver and shank when you use a 2 inch bike rack. There is no strap required for that fit. I've linked the page to bike carriers to assist.
