Changing Tire Size and Axle Spacing on Tandem Trailer

Question:

I am putting 31inch tires on my tandem axle trailer how long do my double eye leaf springs need to be

Expert Reply:

Trailer leaf springs first need to be rated for the weight load on them and be of the appropriate length to fit the hanger spacing, equalizers and shackle straps.

If you are putting much larger tires on the trailer you may have to reposition one axle to provide enough space between the front and rear tires. The minimum distance between front and rear tires on a tandem axle trailer is 1-inch (when the suspension is under load).

If you went with shorter springs and longer equalizers then you could get more space between the axles. However, please note the trailer was built with the axles in those specific locations to best distribute weight. Changing that could void any warranty and can change how the trailer rides.

You can refer to the two linked articles on trailer suspensions for additional information.
