Question:
I'm starting from scratch, needing to install a 7-way wiring harness and a single axle brake controller. What wiring kit and controller do you recommend I purchase?

Since you are starting from scratch, you will need a 4-Way connector, a 4-Way to 7-Way adapter, and a brake controller.
For a 4-Way connector, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, Item # 118467, because it is a confirmed fit and we have had great success with them. To install the harness, you will locate the factory connector in the Subaru's rear cargo area and plug in the connector. Then install the 10-amp mini fuse that is included with the harness.
With the 4-Way connector installed, you will need to add a 7-Way connector so that you can use a brake controller. The easiest way to do this is to convert your 4-Way connector to a 7-Way connector with our Universal Installation Kit For Trailer Brake Controller, Item # ETBC7. This kit includes all the wiring and the 7-Way connector you will need to install a brake controller.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, Item # 90195, which is one of the best controllers on the market as well as being easy to use.
To help you with your project, I have attached a few FAQ articles and videos.
