Parts Needed to Install the Prodigy P3 In a 2009 Ford E-350 and a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Question:
I need a trailer brake controller that will move between 2 vehicles. 2009 Ford E350 no towing package and a 2007 Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited with factory towing package and 4 prong plug. Will be towing an open car hauler trailer, 2 axles. Would like to use as much factory wiring / plugin as possible. I have been looking at the Tekonsha P3. Thanks.

Getting both your 2009 Ford E-350 and your 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited prepped for a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 (excellent choice by the way) will pretty much be the same. Once you install a 4-Way connector on your E-350 then you will install the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 on both vehicles.
The 4-Way that I recommend installing on your E-350 is the Tekonsha T-One # 118551. This includes T-connectors that connect to the tail light housing and then a lead that runs up to your battery for powering your trailer brakes.
The next thing that you need to do for both vehicles is install the Wiring Kit # ETBC7 as i mentioned above. This connects to your 4-Way connector and the includes everything that you need for a fully functioning 7-Way that uses a brake controller. You may need some additional duplex wiring, part # 10-2-1, for your E-350 since it has a longer body than normal passenger vehicles. The No-Drill Mount Bracket # 18136 can be used to mount the 7-Way/4-Way connector without drilling into your bumper.
After installing the # ETBC7 kit you simply need to have a pigtail installed in each vehicle as well as a holder for the P3. The P3 already comes with 2 holders and 1 pigtail so ultimately you just need an extra pigtail which is part # 7894 on our site. One of the holders is considered a more permanent installation so if you want the "quick disconnect" style in both vehicles then you need part # TK5906 as well.
I have linked some sample installation videos for you to check out as well as some helpful articles. The videos don't have the P3 as the brakes controller but they are Tekonsha brake controllers that use the same pigtail so the installation will be the same. Please note that the controllers can just connect to the 4-Way and you don't have to use butt connectors like in the Jeep installation video. That was just the preference of the customer.
