Will the Hopkins # HM40915 Fit a 1997 Ford Explorer
Question:
I think my 97 Explorer has the tow package but am not sure. I found the gray plug but I'm not sure if the Hopkins will work?

If you found the gray plug at the rear of your 1997 Ford Explorer then that would suggest that you have the tow package.
For the tow package you need the Tekonsha part # 118241 since the Hopkins # HM40915 you referenced is for the following vehicles:
2000 - 2001 Mercury Mountaineer with factory 4-flat connector
1998 - 2001 Mazda B Series Pickup with factory tow package
1997 - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer with factory tow package
1998 - 1999 Ford Ranger with factory trailer connector
If you don't have the factory tow package then you need the Tekonsha T-One # 118345 which plugs in behind your tail lights and has a hot lead run to the battery for powering your trailer lights. This will actually work for models that do or do not have the tow package so if you are unsure I would go with this option.
