Roof Rack for a Kayak and SUP on a 2006 Honda CR-V

Question:

I am looking for a roof rack system that will carry both a SUP and a kayak? Can this be done on my 2006 CR-V with factory roof rails front to back?

You can build a roof rack setup that will let you carry both a SUP and a kayak on your 2006 Honda CR-V.

If you don't already have a roof rack system in place, I recommend Rhino Rack's Vortex Aero system, a kit consisting of:

Rhino Rack Vortex Crossbars, 41 inches, Silver, part # RRVA106S-2 or Black, part # RRVA106B-2
Rhino Rack Legs for Vortex, part # RRSX100

This will attach to your vehicle's existing rails that run front to back and allow you to equip a kayak carrier on one side, and a flat SUP carrier on the other. Your overall results from this setup will depend on how wide your SUP is, and where your roof rack sits.

For the carrier, I recommend the Swagman Contour, part # S65148. This J-style carrier will clamp onto your new roof rack system. It includes all the bow and stern tie downs that you'll need for the carrier. For best placement, it should be located near the towers on one side of the vehicle to allow the most room for the SUP carrier.

Your SUP will need to be carried with a flat, saddle style carrier for best results. I recommend Thule's DockGrip carrier, part # TH895. This carrier is able to carry both kayaks and SUP's, giving you added flexibility if needed. You will need to mount this carrier first, giving yourself ample room between the Contour and the SUP's sides. The Rincon also includes the additional tie downs and straps needed for whichever you choose to carry in this rack.

When you set this all up, I recommend putting the crossbars as far apart as safely possible on your roof rack, which will give you additional space between the two J-carriers of the Contour, maximizing the space available for the widest part of your SUP.
