Recommendation to Transport 400 Pound Powered Wheelchair with 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Question:

My in-laws bought a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4X4 2.4l without factory tow package. The salesman, service manager, and finance manager told them it would be no issue to haul a wheelchair carrier and wheelchair with a combined weight of 500 lbs. Do you feel this vehicle is properly designed to handle this load? Also, please recommend a hitch and powered wheelchair carrier to support a 400lb wheelchair. Thank you,

I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. It does state that for the 2.4L engine, the maximum tongue weight for this vehicle is 200 pounds. I do recommend verifying this information with your copy of the owner's manual, as it's very possible you have a different model and the information could differ.

If this is correct, the best option for transporting your powered wheelchair will be with a small trailer, since the vehicle cannot safely handle the type of tongue weight that the carrier and wheelchair will provide.

For a trailer hitch that is confirmed to fit your Jeep, I recommend the Curt Class III Receiver Hitch # C13172. This Class III hitch will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. I have attached an installation video on the 2017 Jeep Cherokee that you can use for reference.

If you do decide to pull a small trailer, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118605 to install a 4-Way connector at the rear of the vehicle. This is needed to connect with and power the trailer's signal lights. This custom-fit harness will install by connecting directly to the built-in ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights.

To tow a trailer you will also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup, along with a link that will take you to our available selection. I have also included a couple additional articles on towing a trailer that you might find helpful.
