Towing Capacity of a 2010 Dodge Journey SXT with Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 75648 Installed
Question:
I have a 2010 Dodge Journey SXT. In the manual it says its maximum towing capacity is 3500lbs. I see the Hidden Hitch here says its specd for 4000lbs. Can you help me out here, how much can i tow with this hitch. Also how does a weight distribution hitch help, does it allow more towing capacity. Thanks.

Expert Reply:
If Dodge has rated your 2010 Journey for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight, that is the maximum the vehicle can tow, even if a trailer hitch is rated higher. The limiting factor is the component with the lowest capacity, which is the rating you need to go by.
Unfortunately adding a weight distribution system wouldn't increase the towing capacity of the vehicle. The towing capacity of the vehicle remains static at 3,500 pounds.
To complete your towing setup you may need the following:
Ball Mount Kit, part # 989900
Tow Ready Wiring, part # 118495
I have included a link to the installation instructions for the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 87487 and the Tow Ready Wiring, part # 118495 as well an install video for each.
