Does Trailer Axle Need to be Moved Forward?

Question:

I used a caravan chassis to make a trailer I cut out 1.5m from rear the total length of trailer from the tow hitch to the rear end is 4.6 m now the front of trailer is very heavy to lift up do I need to move my axle forward as per 60/40 ratio and if I do move it do I measure from tow hitch which is 1 meter or from the trailer box which is 3.6m

Expert Reply:

The correct axle position should be determined by the formula I have added for you. The 60/40 ratio you mentioned is normally just a starting point and you would want to use the formula to figure out the optimal place for your axle. As for measurement, when using this formula you will want to measure from the end of your trailer tongue.
