Recommended Brake Controller and Wiring for 2016 Porsche Cayenne
Question:
Hi there. I am behind the 8 ball in trying to get my 16 Porsche Cayenne ready for towing a fairly large trailer next week as Im moving from CA to NY. My Cayenne has the factory tow kit/hitch installed. I went to the dealer and got two more things one is the part that is square and becomes the receptacle for the trailers electrical stuff, and the second is the part that plugs into that receptacle, its round has four pins in it which connects to the car and on the other side are four pins in a straight line 3-female 1-male that I somehow need to connect to trailers 7-pin Round connector. So I need that part. I also want to buy a Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, but I have no idea how to install it. I have a mechanic willing to help but I am unclear on what parts I need. Most articles I have found on doing it are years old. So, what do I need, just the Controller and one of your install kits? Some people say I need to go and buy a VW PART to connect it? Is that true? If so, which part? Also, some say I need a relay or something. I have a hard time operating my toaster nevermind this stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated, and I dont have much time to get this stuff bought, delivered and installed can any of you guys help me? ALSO, do you have any installation videos or tutorials or anything I can share with my mechanic? I can send pictures connectors if helpful. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP

We can absolutely help you to get your 2016 Porsche Cayenne set up for towing your new trailer.
You are on the right track with the wiring that will be necessary on your vehicle. It sounds like you recently had a 4-Way flat connector installed at the rear of the Porsche. From there, you will just need to install the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This kit will include everything needed to install a fully functional 7-Way from the existing 4-Way. It includes a 7-Way connector that will hook right up to the connector on your trailer to power its signal lights and, along with the brake controller, send power to its electric brakes. I have attached a great article that walks through each of the installation steps for this kit that you and your mechanic might find very helpful.
Then for the trailer brake controller itself, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is an excellent choice. This is one of our best and most popular controllers because of how reliable it is and how well it works. It is a proportional controller, which means it will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Porsche Cayenne.
The Porsche Cayenne is a bit unique with regards to the process of installing a brake controller. For this reason, we actually have a great article that details this process and any additional items you may need. I have attached the article for you to check out. You will need to obtain a connector housing (#1J0-972-782) and 2 wire/terminal assemblies (#000-979-228) from a local VW or Porsche dealer. Additional relays should not be needed with the P3 Brake Controller.
We do not currently have an installation video on your Porsche Cayenne, but the articles should be a great help.
This will complete everything you need with regards to the wiring on your vehicle. You mentioned already having a trailer hitch installed, but you will also need a ball mount and hitch ball to tow the trailer, if you do not have one already. I have included another article that explains how to choose the best one for towing your trailer level, along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
