Expert Reply:

For a 5000-lb travel trailer with tongue weight (TW) of 450-lbs you can use a weight distribution/sway control system such as the Equal-i-zer 4-Point Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET which works effectively over a range of trailer TW from 200- to 600-lbs. This will both prevent trailer sway from starting and shift some of the trailer TW forward back onto the vehicle's front axle. This will restore steering and braking performance and reduce rear-end squat.

Keep in mind that any cargo weight in the 4runner that sits behind the rear axle, say a generator or cooler, must be added to the loaded trailer TW to get your total effective TW. Be sure the trailer is fully-loaded with all gear and supplies before you measure it's TW with scale # e99044. You want to choose a system such that your total TW falls in the middle of the system's operating range.
