Recommendations to Tow a Trailer Level with a 2011 Mazda 3
Question:
I am looking into a hitch for my sons Mazda 3 and the Curt hitch has a height of 10 1/4. I need to reach a height of 19inch to my sons motorcycle trailer tongue height. The most raise I see for 1 1/4 hitch is 5 inches. So I am guessing its close to 7 inches with ball which puts me 2 inches short. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks.

Expert Reply:
Brophy ball mount # BM96 has a 5-1/2 inch rise so that will get you 1/2 inch closer. You would not add the height of the ball though because the coupler on the trailer covers the ball so the ball height is a non-factor. The only other thing you can do is lower the height of the trailer.
If you do think lowering the trailer in the back is the way to go then you may be able to use an over/under conversion kit if:
The trailer leaf spring stack is currently mounted above the axles
The trailer uses double-eye springs
And the trailer has 2-3/8 inch or 3 inch diameter round axles
For a 2-3/8 inch round axle use # K71-384-00 and for a 3 inch diameter axle use # K71-385-00.
If you cannot use an over/under conversion kit then the only other way to lower the height of the trailer is to have the old suspension hangers cut off and new, shorter ones welded on by a qualified professional welder. I have included a link to the hanger main page for you.
