Installing a Weight Distribution System on a Trailer with a Bottom Mount Coupler

Question:

I spent 3 hours trying to get it to fit on a trailer where the ball coupler is welded to the bottom of the 6 frame. It appears that the lower mounting made forced the angle off the trunnion bars to pass to low under the pad cradle. Is that possible? Should the system work? Thanks

I believe the problem you are experiencing is due to the fact that the trailer has a bottom-mount coupler. You will need to have the weight distribution shank in the drop position with the head low and probably tilted towards the trailer in order to get the proper height for your trailer. The spring bars should be close to being parallel with the trailer frame.

If you make these adjustments and the system still is not properly mounted, this weight distribution system probably is not going to be the best fit or your trailer.

A better fit could be a system that employs chain hung spring bars and use chain hangers, # RP58305, that bolt to the side of the trailer frame (frame can be no thicker than 2-1/4 inches). Strait-Line Weight Distribution, # RP66130, would be a good option. It has the same capacities as the system you have referenced. The snap up brackets would need to be replaced with the RP58305 hangers.

Even this type of system may not allow the ball to be low enough for a bottom mounted coupler. But proper adjustments will make a big difference.
