Recommended 7-Way RV Trailer Connection for a 2014 Volkswagen Touareg
Question:
I have a odd looking set up on my 2014 VW Tourag. Does the unit: 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - Vehicle End Item # HM40975 snap onto my existing VW unit as seen in picture, or do I need something else in order for my car to accept a normal 7 pin round trailer connector? Thanks

The Hopkins 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket, # HM40975, is designed to be installed on a vehicle that already has the trailer towing wiring installed. This will include the wiring to add a brake controller to your vehicle.
If your 2014 VW Touareg has the OEM towing package, then the Hopkins trailer connector will allow you to attached the plug from your vehicle to the trailer connector. The plug will plug right into the back of the Hopkins connector.
If your vehicle does not have the towing package installed, then a 4-pole trailer harness, a 7-way connector and brake controller wiring will need to be installed. For the 4-way harness, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 118668. This harness will allow you to connect to OEM electrical plugs to run power for your trailer's lighting.
To run brake function, your best option will be to install the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat, # ETBC7. This kit will include the 7-way connector, wiring, and other electrical components needed to connect the 7-way to a brake controller in the cab of your vehicle.
If you are needing a brake controller, then I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885. The P2 is one of our most popular controller because of it ease of use and simple installation. The P2 is a proportional unit which will apply the brakes to your trailer with the same intensity you apply the brakes on your Touareg.
I have attached videos of the products mentioned above for you to view and a couple articles on installing the # ETBC7 kit and installing a brake controller from scratch.
