If your Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 was sparking when you turned your vehicle on then that is definitely not a good sign - it should not be doing that. However, if your engine was already running when connections were made (which is not advisable) then the spark could have simply been the power connecting.
I recommend checking to make sure that there is a 20 amp Circuit Breaker, like part # 9506P, between the power wire for the Voyager and your vehicle's battery. If there is none then the Voyager could have been overloaded.
If you are pressing your brake pedal to test the Voyager and your vehicle was not moving then the brake controller will not activate as it uses inertia (movement) to determine when the tow vehicle is coming to a stop. You can also test your brake controller by testing the 7-Way with a Circuit Tester # PTW2992 to see if there is power getting to the pin in the 5 o'clock position (which is the brake controller pin). If you are not getting power, you will want to cut the brake controller signal wire about 6 inches from the brake controller and test it with the circuit tester. If you still are not getting power to your brake controller you will need a new one.
Check those things out and if you are still experiencing problems just let me know and I will help you troubleshoot further.
