For your 2013 Ford Escape, I recommend looking at the Yakima FullBack 3 Bike Rack # Y02633. This is a trunk mounted bike rack that is confirmed to fit your vehicle and will prevent you from having to install a trailer hitch. The carrier can hold up to 3 bikes with a total weight of 90 pounds. A bike and rack lock are also included to help deter theft of your valuables.
I have attached a video demonstration for this rack on your 2013 Ford Escape so you can see exactly how it will look and work on your vehicle.
Since it sounds like you will be carrying a few different bike styles, you might need an adapter bar like the Kuat # UB01. This is typically needed for children's, woman's or alternative frame bikes and will provide a horizontal attachment point for level transport. I have included a demonstration video on this product so you can see why it might be required.
If you do want to go with a hitch-mounted bike rack, I recommend first installing the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75782. This hitch is confirmed to fit your Ford Escape and will provide a 2 inch receiver opening for hitch-mounted accessories. The advantage of a hitch-mounted rack over a trunk option is that there will be no vehicle contact as the hitch will place the bike rack behind your Escape. Many hitch mounted bike racks also allow for rear cargo access on your vehicle.
For a hitch mounted rack, I recommend looking at the Kuat Transfer 3 Bike Platform Rack # KU24FR. This is a great 3 bike rack that will support each bike by their wheels so there will be no bike frame contact. The rack itself can tilt away, with the bikes still loaded, for easy rear cargo access on your vehicle. With a wheel mount option like this, an adapter bar like the above mentioned product will not be needed.
