Is the Yakima HoldUp Replacement Shank # 8880581 Compatible With Draw-Tite Receiver on 2014 Mustang

Question:

Dear Sir/Madam, I have a 2014 Mustang GT and I want to buy a Draw-Tite hitch as per recommendations: Draw-Tite 24863 I also have a Yakima HoldUp bike rack with a 2 inch tongue. I am therefore also planning to buy a 1 1/4inch tongue to make it compatible with the new hitch: Yakima 8880581 Here are my questions: 1. Will using a replacement tongue allow my hitch to preserve its 200lb load capacity? I am eager to avoid hitch adapter, which would reduce the load capacity to 100lbs. 2. Does the above described hitch/tongue combo have sufficient rear bumper clearance or would I have to buy an extension defeating the purpose of buying a replacement tongue? Thank you in advance,

Normally the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24863 is the hitch receiver that I would recommend for your 2014 Ford Mustang, but since you are wanting to use the Yakima HoldUp with a 1-1/4 inch shank, like part # Y02445, you will need to go with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11210 instead.

Keep in mind that the Curt hitch receiver requires the use of a Support Strap # 18050 for all non-trailer loads per the Curt warranty.

The reason that I recommend the Curt in this instance is because the Draw-Tite receiver has a weld-stop inside of the receiver that prohibits the use of certain accessories (see attached picture). Since the Curt hitch receiver doesn't have this weld-stop it is the only way that you will be able to use the HoldUp in a Class I, 1-1/4 inch receiver.

When we installed the Curt receiver on a similar 2014 Mustang we found that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the rear bumper was 7-1/2 inches. Taking that into consideration, you will be able to use the HoldUp with your Mustang but only in the folded down position. When folded down the measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the bike rack is 12 inches and when it is folded up, it only measures 7 inches so you will not be able to utilize the fold-up feature of the HoldUp.

Using the Replacement 1-1/4" Tongue for Yakima HoldUp Bike Racks # 8880581 to replace the shank on your HoldUp for 2 inch hitches # Y02443 will not reduce the 200 lbs Tongue Weight (TW) capacity of the Curt hitch. If you were to use an extension it would reduce your TW capacity by 50% and would also put a lot of extra strain on the small Class I receiver so I do not recommend doing that at all. You will want to consult your owner's manual for specific instructions that involve weight capacities for your Mustang.

A similar bike rack that will allow you to use the fold up feature is the Kuat NV 2.0 Base 2-Bike Platform Rack # BA12B which measures 7-7/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack when folded up. I have attached a review video of this bike rack for you to check out should you decide to go this route.
