Recommendation For Hitch Mounted Bike Rack And Trailer Compatibility On 2012 Subaru Outback

Question:

Hello, I am trying to fit a Swagman Original 3 Bike Towing Rack for 2inch Trailer Hitch - Tilting Item # S64600 to my 2012 Subaru Outback that will be towing a Yakima Rack and Roll 78. I have measured the rise I need to be 7inch on my hitch. I have also measured the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the receiver to be 2.5inch and, according to your site, I need 3-1/8inch to have enough room on my hitch to mount the Swagman rack. I think this hitch will work, but can you please tell me the distance from the hitch pin hole to the beginning of the support gusset, or can you recommend a hitch that will have the proper rise and clearance to run this rack? Thank you.

For your Swagman Original 3 Bike Towing Rack the base is 3-1/8 inches as you mentioned. This rack does require 10 inches between the center of the hitch pin hole and the center of the hitch ball.

The MaxxTow Adjustable-Height Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 7-1/2" Drop, 6-1/4" Rise - 5,000 lb # MT70068 has a measurement of 8-1/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the upright bar, so that will give you 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of your bike rack. This will not be enough space to clear your bumper if you are using the Draw-Tite # 75673 which has a measurement of 5-3/4 inches from center of pin to outer bumper, but it will be plenty of space if you have the Curt # 13390 which has 2-1/2 inches for that same measurement. If you have the Draw-Tite hitch or a similar one, I recommend using the Brophy Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver 7" # HE06 which will reduce your hitch tongue weight capacity by 50% but will make this system compatible.

To use this ball mount, I recommend the # 63845 for your 2 inch ball to match your trailer coupler and two of the Let's Go Aero Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" Hitches - 2-5/8" Span # 63232 to secure your investment.

For your Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer - 78" # Y08107, I recommend the Kickstand for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08115 and the Master Lock Adjustable Trailer Coupler Lock - Stainless Steel # 2847DAT
