Recommended Flat Towing Setup For 2009 Chevy HHR Behind 2005 Monaco Motorhome

Question:

Hi, I have a 2005 Monaco Motorhome that I recently purchased. It came with A Roadmaster Stowmaster tow bar. I have the tow bar, safety cables and wire harness on the RV. I intend to tow a 2009 Chevy HHR not SS. I also have the brackets which are a twist type #521563-1 on bracket. I also have the pin w/ring, lock and key, carabiners and small looped cables. What would you suggest I buy to complete my setup? Thank you.

For your 2009 Chevy HHR (not SS), I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # 3141-1. The # 521563-1 base plates you have are a fit for 2009-2011 Honda Civic Coupe vehicles and will not work with your HHR. I suggest using Loctite Threadlocker # LT37420 to install these vehicle specific base plates. These baseplates will be compatible with your Roadmaster StowMaster Tow Bar - Car Mount - 2" Ball - 6,000 lbs # RM-501.

Not knowing what wire harness you have or its compatibility, I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 which will use your vehicle's factory wiring while still protecting it and will give you a clean connection at the front of your HHR with all the functions needed. For your specific HHR, I recommend the Roadmaster FuseMaster Fuse Bypass - 13" - 20-Amp Mini-Fuse # RM76511 that will let you prep for towing with a simple switch versus pulling a fuse each time. This allows you to tow your vehicle without draining its battery.

For your braking, I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # SM99251. This system lets you install the proportional braking system that applies the brakes with the same intensity and at the same time as you hit the brake pedal in your 2005 Monaco Motorhome. This system only needs adjustment at installation and then becomes a plug and play system for you. It is a favorite with our installers. Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit - Chevrolet HHR # RM-751428 is needed to alert your RV system when the brake pedal of your towed vehicle is being applied. You will also need the Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400 which will keep your RV and your HHR lights working in tandem and keeps your car's brake signal from overriding your RV signals.

The last thing to consider is the rise or drop needed for your HHR to be towed level. I've attached an article to help with your ball mount needs. This will complete your flat tow setup.
