Troubleshooting Voyager Brake Controller # 39510 Not Working On 2004 Ford F-250
Question:
someone previously cut the wires under the hood to the trailer brake hookup on my 2004 f-250. I have wired up the controller tapping the black wire into the original fuse, white wire to an existing ground, red wire to the red/green wire on the brake light switch and the blue wire to the blue trailer wire under the hood that was cut. I have power to the the black and power to the red when the brake pedal is pressed but no light on the controller and no brakes on the trailer. Any idea what this could be? Thanks

I would start by testing your brake controller. To do so, you will want to cut the Blue wire coming out of the brake controller approximately 2 Inches or so away from the controller. Then, make sure the other wires are connected properly. The Black wire should be connected to a 40 amp circuit breaker, part # 9510, and then to the positive battery terminal. The White wire to a good clean ground, I would recommend the negative battery terminal. The Red wire, from the information I have should be connected to the Light Green wire of the stoplight switch.
After all connections are made and the Blue wire is cut temporarily, and you have power going into the brake controller, you can test the brake controller. You can use the manual over ride switch to activate brakes and also hit the brake pedal on your truck. If the light on the brake controller does not light up, a short may have caused the brake controller to go bad and it will need to be replaced.
In addition to testing the brake controller I would recommend checking over the other components of your towing setup, just to make sure there are not any other issues.
You will want to inspect the 7-way on your vehicle and trailer to make sure there is not any corrosion in the connectors. You will also want to check the fuses under the hood of your vehicle to make sure the accessory fuse or towing fuse is not blown. Then I would recommend inspecting the wires on the trailer to make sure there is not any exposed wires that could cause a short.
I have linked an FAQ on brake controllers and an FAQ on installing a brake controller that you may find as a good reference. In addition I have linked an FAQ about installing brake controllers on 1997-2004 Ford trucks.
