Upgrade From 225/75R15 Load Range C Tire to Load Range D Tire on a Horse Trailer
Question:
Hi, I have a two horse trailer that weighs about 3200lbs, and carries two thousand pound animals. The current tires I am looking to replace are 225/75/r15 with load range c. I am worried that with the weight capacity for those range tires that I need a higher load range, can you recommend if I need a d load range tire or if the c tire works? I also go on highway trips where I go over 70mph. I have had great luck with my current tires, but they are rotted from the sun.

I'm assuming that your horse trailer is a tandem axle trailer since most are and if that is the case, then your load range C tires are more than capable of handling your trailer and your horses. The ST225/75R15 load range C tire that we carry, Kenda Karrier Tire part # AM10251, is rated for 2,150 lbs at 50 psi. Four of these tires would give you a total capacity of 8,600 lbs.
Your gross trailer weight is likely somewhere between 5,200 lbs and 7,200 lbs depending on whether you meant that you have 2 one thousand pound horses or 2 two thousand pound horses. Either way, you are well within the capacity of the load range C tires.
For your situation, I recommend stepping up to the Provider Load Range D Tires, # TTWTRTM2257515D, because these tires have the same Radial construction as your current tires, which is great for highway driving, and they are rated for 81 mph. Our load range C tire and most trailer tires are not actually speed rated so most manufacturers default to 65 mph. Moving up to a load range D tire will have a very minimal impact if any on the ride quality for your horses, which I'm sure is important to you, so you don't have to be concerned there. Moving up one load range will build a little safety margin for you as well.
