Is it Possible to Wire a Back-Up Camera to a Vehicle Using a Trailer Wiring Harness

Question:

I want to use the factory trailer wiring to power a backup camera. Can I get only the connector that matches the one in the car, so I can put the camera wires to it?

It is possible to use the trailer wiring harness, # 118467, to wire a back-up camera to your 2011 Subaru Forester. However, there could be issue in how the camera will operate and to the vehicle's wiring.

You will have to find a 12-volt power source to operate the camera. The only way to get a non-pulsing 12-volt signal will be to wire into the tail light circuit of the harness. Using the turn or stop light circuit would cause the camera to turn on and off rapidly. To operate the camera you will have to turn your vehicle's running or headlights on. The harness will not provide a constant 12-volt power source.

Also, the harness has not been tested for this application. There is no information on the possible negative outcomes of using the wiring harness for which it was not intended for on your 2011 Forester.

It is recommended that you use the back-up cameras installation guidelines that appear on the products instructions.

I'm really not sure. I'm assuming this is a factory backup camera? I would check with a local Ram dealer to see if they have any insight or if they can check out the wiring to make sure everything is hooked up correctly.
