Are Stabilizing Straps Required to Carry Platform Bike Rack with Curt Trailer Hitch

Question:

I recently put a Curt trailer hitch on my Crosstrek. Now I want to get the platform rack for fat bikes. Do I need the hitch support strap also?

Expert Reply:

Per Curt warranty requirements, all non-trailer loads, which will include a platform bike rack, must be supported by stabilizing straps. You can use the Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap, part # 18050.

We offer a wide variety of platform bike racks that are designed to carry Fat Bikes. I recommend looking at the Swagman Sitkka 2 Bike Platform Rack # S64687. This is a really nice platform-style rack that can accommodate fat bikes with tire widths of up to 5 inches. It has a weight capacity of 45 pounds per bike and the spring-loaded lever at the base of the rack will allow you to tilt the carrier down for easy rear cargo access on your vehicle. This bike rack is compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitch receivers.

I have included video demonstrations of these products for your review.
