Differences Between Thule CG-9 and CS-10 Tire Chains and Can Tire Chains Damage Tires

Question:

What is the main difference between the Thule CG-9 and CS10 Snow Chain? I have a 2004 Honda Accord V6 EXL. Which one of these two or another snow chain would you recommend? What are the potential areas of damage that a snow chain can cause? Ive heard of Rim damage, Tire scuffing, etc. Can it also damage my brakes? I have 2004 Honda Accord EXV6 and would like to know what are common complaints / issues with using Snow Chains. thx.

The Thule CS-10 tire chain has an external quick release system, they are self tensioning (just put them on and go), they have 10 millimeters clearance inside and on the tread, they feature a diamond pattern with icebreaker reinforcements for added grip, they have anti-scratch nylon bumpers to protect vehicle rims, and they have a color-coded assembly design.

The CG-9 chains are also self tensioning, but do require one stop to fit the chain properly. They have 9 millimeters of clearance and also have the anti-scratch nylon bumpers and color coded assembly design. With these, you are not getting the extra convenience of a quick release, install and go, or icebreaker reinforcements.

Because the CS-10 has so many more convenience and performance features, I would recommend them over the CG-9. The CS-10 will be much easier to put on and take off and if you have ever had to use tire chains before, you know what a pain it can be for standard chains. I have included a link below to all of the available tire chains by tire size for your 2004 Honda Accord. Just click on the tire size you have to see the available options.

As far as damage goes, tire chains have come a long way, but there is still a chance you might see some scuffing on the side wall of the tire and scratching on rims is also possible, depending on the chains you choose. There should not be any problem with the brakes provided that the chains are installed correctly and as long as the vehicle manufacturer allows the use of chains. You will need to check the owners manual for any restrictions on tire chain use and/or if chains can even be used.

Some of the more common issues with chains is that they can be difficult to put on. These are usually on the basic, less expensive chains that do not see much use. Chains that have to be hand tensioned take longer to install. Many of these types of chains also drape over the side wall which can lead to complaints of tire scuffing or scratched rims. The way around that is the Thule K-Summit chains which virtually eliminate the potential for side wall and rim damage. I have added 2 more links below. The first is our tire chain FAQ article with a lot of good information in it, and the second is an FAQ on Thule tire chains.
