What Snow Tire Chains Or Cables Are Recommended For A 2007 Ford Escape 4WD

Question:

Trying to choose the right chains/cables for my 07 Ford Escape 4WD. Tires are P235/70R16 Continental Contitrac. These will be used only when 4WD is not sufficient when driving on highways, roads and parking lots to/from ski resorts. So that means when the roads are pretty bad. Trying to choose between these two products: PW2119V or TH01571247

Before buying snow tire chains you will want to check your owners manual or with the Ford dealer if you can install snow tire chains on your 2007 Ford Escape 4WD, or if there are any limitations.

Both the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW1042, and the Thule Chains # TH2004205105, will be compatible with the 235/70R16 tire size.

The Glacier cable chains are manually adjusted with the optional # PW105 rubber tensioners. It has an internal clearance of 12mm, which means it is a SAE Class S rated snow chain. A Class S snow tire chain has to have an internal clearance of 15mm or less. That measurement means the clearance between the tire sidewall and the closest part of your vehicle. Most of the newer vehicles with larger tires recommend Class S snow chains because of limited tire clearance.

Both of the Thule snow chains and Glacier snow cables will work in snow conditions. The difference is the snow chains will give you better grip in more ice conditions because the chain links will bite into the ice where as the snow cables tend to slide over the ice. The snow chains will make a little more noise on dry pavement as compared to the snow cables.
