Question:

I have a Bayliner boat trailer with a 5-pole plug. What wiring harness would you recommend to use with the Draw-Tite trailer hitch?

The plug really doesn't matter based on the trailer hitch. The functions you want will determine what the best fit will be for your application. To have all the functions available to you, most people get the 7-way trailer connector. This will give you the turn/brake/running/ground/reverse/brake controller/12V power functions. This is what comes with most trucks that have a factory tow package, however, if you just want a 5 way flat I will give you that option as well.

For your 2015 Dodge Durango, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2", # 75713, is the hitch I recommend. This is a very easy to install trailer hitch that will give you the ability to keep a full size spare stowed under the vehicle. It is a very strong hitch with a nice powdercoat finish to resist rust.

For your wiring, I recommend the OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter - 7 Way Trailer Connector, # TK22113, if you will be installing a 7 way with brake controller from nothing. This harness will give you the factory wiring.

If you don't have any wiring, I recommend the Teckonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # 118617. This will simply plug into your factory wiring behind the tail lights and then a power wire is run to your battery. This will give you a 4 way flat connector. If you want to add the fifth function of reverse, I recommend using the Tow Ready 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter, # 20036. This 5 way will directly connect to your trailer.

If you already have a 4 way or 5 way on your vehicle and you want a 7-way, then I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires, # ETBC7. This will utilize your current wiring and give you a 7-way and 4--way connection at your bumper. This kit will give you the connectors, the wire, and the circuit breakers you need to complete your 7-way as well as the bracket to mount it.

If you add a 7-way, in order to tow a trailer with brakes on it, you will need a brake controller. I recommend the Teckonsha Prodigy P3, # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that will give you the same braking pressure on the trailer that you apply to the brakes in your Durango. This brake controller also has an LCD display that makes understanding the functions and the diagnostics really easy. There is no guesswork of code deciphering or needing to keep the manual handy for troubleshooting. It has 3 levels of boost and is adjustable to your desired towing needs.

To upgrade your Bayliner Trailer, I recommend the 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box - 10' Long, # HS381-9000. This will give you the ability to utilize your current wiring and give you easy connection points for adding functionality or troubleshooting issues.
