Tire Chain Recommendation for 185-14C on VW Vanagon

Question:

Hi, I have a 1981 VW Vanagon, non-camper, with stock 14inch wheels and the recommended 185-14C, 8-Ply tires. The owners manual states: Only use chains with fine pitch links protruding no more than 1/2inch / 15mm from tire tread and side walls, including tensioner. My mechanic does NOT recommend cables, he said I should use Link Chains. I live in the Los Angeles area and need to check on a relative once a month or so who lives in Big Bear. Im not sure how many of the residential streets are cleared of snow and he also has a steep driveway. The snow season has already started. What product do recommend? Thank you.

Tire chains do provide much better traction in snow than cables. The modern size equivalent to a 185-14C is the size 185/70-14. Which the tire chains to use would be the part # TC1530. These are diamond pattern chains that install easily and have a Class S compatibility which means they would easily work with your clearance requirement.
