How to Determine Correct Hitch Ball Size for Hadco MK-61 Trailer Coupler

Question:

My trailer came with a 1-7/8inch hitch ball, but it feels very loose. I bought a 2inch ball to test and it fits tightly. I am unsure if the hitch is meant to have the larger ball or is just out of adjustment for the smaller ball. There is nothing stamped on the top of the Hadco MK-61 coupler.

There are three sizes of hitch ball that are all in the same general size ballpark: 1-7/8-inch, 50mm and 2-inch. If your coupler has an adjustment option that may do the trick, but if not you may want to replace the coupler with one that does indicate the correct ball size. This is typically stamped on the coupler as a safety requirement (thank you for checking your coupler for this information). We do offer coupler rebuild kits but nothing for Hadco.

Our range of couplers is shown on the linked page. At the top of the page you can click on the type you need, such as a straight tongue coupler like # CT-3003-Z or a 50-degree a-frame coupler like # CA-5210-B. Select the coupler based on the trailer's gross weight rating.

If your 2-inch ball fits well in the coupler and there is no visible sign of wear or damage to the coupler then that alone may be the issue.
