Adding a 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector to a 2012 GMC Acadia
Question:
Hello, I have a 2012 Acadia without the tow package. I need the 5 pin harness as I have a trailer with surge disc brakes. Without the reverse lights my trailer brakes will lock up. What are my option? Thanks

In order to install a 5-Way flat trailer connector on your 2012 GMC Acadia you will need 2 items. First, since your model does not have the factory tow package, you will start by installing a 4-Way # 118451.
With the 4-Way installed you will just need the second item which is a 4- to 5-Way adapter, # 20036. The adapter has an extra wire that will need to be spliced into a reverse light wire. You may be able to find a reverse light wire behind one of the tail lights by probing the wires with a circuit tester such as # 40376.
For vehicles with reverse lights in the rear hatch another place to check is in the wiring that goes from the roof to the hatch. You can test those wires as well. And a third place to locate a reverse light wire is behind one of the reverse lights themselves.
When testing wires for reverse light signals it is important to take safety measures so the vehicle doesn't roll. Have someone sit in the vehicle with the emergency brake on, their foot on the brake pedal, and the wheels chocked before they shift into reverse so you can test the wires.
