Tire Chain Recommendation for a 1999 Chevy Silverado With Chrome Rims
Question:
My 1999 Chevy Silverado Truck has after market Chrome rims with P255/55R18 tires. Will Chains or Cables , Damage or scratch Rims? What type would work better for this application? Chains? Cables?

Expert Reply:
Snow chains and even cables have metal parts that could potentially scratch your chrome wheels. It is more likely that scratches will occur during the installation process because when moving the chains are, ideally, in the correct position away from the rims and centrifugal force and tension will keep them in place.
Probably the safest bet in terms of keeping your chrome rims pristine is to use something like the Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners, # PWH2229SC. With the cam tighteners, you will not have to worry about using a tensioner positioned directly in front of the wheel. These chains have minimal side wall intrusion meaning when installed and tightened properly, they will remain on the sidewall away from the rim. I have included an FAQ article on snow chains below.
