Tire Chains that Will Fit a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2013 Jeep Wrangler

Question:

Hi guys, we have two vehicles - a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 265/50 R20 and a 2013 Jeep Wranger 255/70 R 18 - and I am looking for one set of chains that I can carry in either vehicle. 1. Can you confirm the Titan TC2326 will fit both? 2. Can you provide an opinion as to why we were advised by the dealer NOT to install chains on these vehicles? Thanks

Titan tire chains # TC2326 do indeed fit both the 265/50R20 tires and the 255/70R18 tires on your Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler.

The reason you were told not to install chains is because on some vehicles the inner tire sidewall is very close to other vehicle components. There is a chance the chains can make contact leading to damage to the vehicle. It may even state in your owner's manual not to use chains or to only use a certain kind of chain or only with a certain tire size.

The fact of the matter is that in some areas chains are required by law and a dealer or auto manufacturer cannot ask you to break the law. This is what I call the Tire Chain Paradox. It occurs when chains are required by law but not allowed by the vehicle manufacturer. The law always trumps the manufacturer though.

You just have to choose chains that require little to no clearance on the inner sidewall. Titan chains # TC2326 have a link thickness of 3.7mm. They will stick out from the tire at least 4mm but likely more. So you can check for clearance with the tires straight, all the way left, and all the way right. If anything is too close when checking for clearance you will need to use different chains.

There is only one type of chains that does not mount at all on the inner sidewall and they are the K-Summit chains # TH02230K77. They cost more but for something that has zero chance of making contact between the inner sidewall and vehicle there is no better option.
