How to Find the Brake Wire on a 2000 Chevrolet Express Van

Question:

Hi I purchased a hayes controller and universal harness a while back. It is for a 2000 chevy e3500 Fleetwood van chassis motorhome. It did not come equipped with trailer brake wiring. How do I find the brake wire under the dash that sends the controller the signal that the brakes are being pushed? Thanks very much for your help.

In order to find the brake wire under your dash, you are going to need a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. Then you are going to need someone to engage the brake on your 2000 Chevrolet Express Van as you use your circuit tester to see which is the brake wire. When you find the right wire, a light will glow on the circuit tester.

The wires you need to test are the bundle of wires coming out of the back of the brake pedal stop light switch. Use the circuit tester to find the hot wire only when the brake pedal is pressed. Once you find it, you will want to splice the red wire from the brake controller into your brake light wire using Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05744-10.

If you do not already have a 7 way in the back of your vehicle to connect your trailer to, you will want to install one as well using the # ETBC7 kit. This has everything you need to complete your brake controller installation. I attached an installation video of this kit being installed on a 2002 Chevrolet Express Van which will be the same process for your 2000 Chevrolet Express Van.

I attached a help article on how to install your brake controller from scratch for your reference.
