Adaping 4-Pole Connector to 7-Way on 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Question:
I just bought a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser and it has a 4 plug from the factory. What would I need to upgrade my 4 plug to a 7 plug. Thanks

If the trailer you are planning on towing does not have electric brakes and you simply need to provide a lighting connection for the trailer, you can very easily convert your existing 4-pole to a 7-way by using a 4 to 7-Way Adapter, part # 37185.
If the trailer has electric brakes, you will need a brake controller to actuate them. I would recommend the Tekonsha P2, part # 90885. The P2 is very user friendly and the initial set up is simple. You will need the Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7 to complete the installation. The kit includes everything necessary for installing the controller, including the adapter I mentioned above.
The adapter has a 4-pole plug on it that will plug into the existing 4-pole on your FJ Cruiser, as well as 4 additional wires. The blue wire carries the output voltage from the brake controller, the white wire is grounded to the vehicle, the black wire runs to the positive battery terminal to provide power for any trailer accessories, and the purple wire is typically used for reverse lights on the trailer, if needed.
The process is pretty straightforward, and I will provide links below to our Brake Controller Installation Guide as well as some installation videos showing a brake controller being installed on a 2008 FJ Cruiser. The install process on your 2010 model will be identical. I will also provide links to the products mentioned above.
