Troubleshooting Factory Brake Controller Error 0.9 on a 2016 Nissan Titan XD

Question:

I have an interesting dilemma. I purchased a 2016 Nissan Titan XD which has an integrated brake controller. In the owners manual, while not explicitly saying this is a Prodigy P2 it implies it is as the indicators and boost settings specifically call out the settings as Prodigy P2 by name. Based on that, I assume it is a Prodigy P2. I am having an issue with the 0.9 error code only when the trailer is attached. I get the error code when applying the brakes foot pedal and when manually triggering the controller. It will generally blink a few times, then show the brake power as if it were functioning normal. This has just recently cropped up. The first few times I towed the same trailer this issue was not present. There has not been any change to the system wiring. Where should I begin?

That is an interesting dilemma; for the Prodigy P2, the 0.9 error is one that will flash a few times a second or steadily display. When this occurs it is because the controller recognizes that the trailer is connected but the P2 loses connection to the battery ground.

First place to start is the connections. I would first check the trailer connector for any corrosion both inside and outside of the connector. Corrosion can cause all type of errors including the 0.9 you are getting. Next I would check all the ground connections on your vehicle not only on the trailer connector in the rear but in the connections under the hood to the battery. For the best ground connection, it should be connected directly to the negative battery terminal. Also check for corrosion on this post. The mounting location of the ground wire should always be on a clean and tightly mounted surface.

If no matter how well the controller is grounded the error message continues to display my contact at Tekonsha tells me that the intermittent grounding problem that you are having indicates an internal problem with the controller, and that the controller should be replaced.
