Preparing Weld Nuts for Trailer Hitch Installation on a 2007 Hyundai Elantra
Question:
While waiting for the hitch for my 2007 Hyundai Elantra to arrive, I would like to chase tap the in-frame bolt holes. Could you clue me in to the bolt diameter and pitch to make tap choice easier. I sure dont want to cross thread these 4 holes

Instead of starting with a tap, I recommend instead a good thorough cleaning using a penetrate like WD-40 and a wire brush like # DW00254. You can spray down the holes, let it set for about 10 minutes, and then run the wire brush vigorously in the holes. You may have to do this several times to thoroughly clean the holes. It just takes a little time and some elbow grease, but cleaning the holes will not run the risk of damaging the threads like a tap would.
The installation of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 24795, for your 2007 Hyundai Elantra, requires no drilling or tapping of attachment point holes on the vehicle. The trailer hitch hardware is designed to fit in the existing weld nuts on the vehicle. Tapping the holes could result in the hardware, and thus the hitch, not fitting.
If the weld nuts are so compacted that tapping the holes is the only option, you can make your own thread tapper. I have included a video below that shows the process of making one at home.
I have included a link to the installation details for the trailer hitch, which includes the bolt sizes, and a video showing the cleaning process of weld nuts, and a video showing hitch installation on a similar vehicle below.
