We have run into this scenario a few times. There is a solution and it is fairly simple, but it will take some patience and some wiring skills. It is easy to go from 4 to 5, and from 5 to 4, but when you go 5 to 5 but add an isolator is when it takes more time.
An isolator, or Powered ModuLite/Converter, does as you say. It isolates the trailer lights so that if something were to happen to the trailer, it would not damage the lights or wiring on the motorcycle. This is the right way to do things as all the wiring on a bike is tucked away. But all these isolators convert 5 down to 4. As you have found, many motorcycle trailer continue using a 5 wire so you will have to up-convert from 4 to 5 with another converter. It is extra parts and wiring, but spending some extra time and buying an extra part now is relatively inexpensive insurance to keep you from having to re-light and re-wire the bike.
Part # 119178 is not the part you need. It converts, but does not have the isolated power source. Instead you need part # C59496. It is the same converter with the added isolated power circuit. Install this kit first and get it functioning properly. The connector should function as white/ground, brown/running light, green/right brake and blinker, and yellow/left brake and blinker.
Once that kit is running right, cut off the 4-Way and wire in part # 118158. This will separate the brake signal from the turn signals and allow you to connect to whatever style 5-Wire connector the trailer uses.
