Thule does not yet have confirmed trunk-mount bike carrier fits for the 2016 Volvo XC90. Yakima does have several confirmed fits for your car, for both 2- and 3-bike carriers, but due to the nature of the car's hatch design you are limited to carrying 2 bikes due to the overall weight load on the car. If you need to transport 3 bikes I strongly recommend installing a hitch receiver and using a hitch-mount rack.

Curt offers 2-inch Class III hitch # C13233 for your car. This hitch includes all installation hardware. A bit of drilling and some heat shield trimming is required too. Basic hand tools and a torque wrench like # ALL944001 are all that you need.

With this 2-inch hitch installed you can select a Class III bike rack of up to 5-bike capacity. You will need to use stabilizing strap # 18050 as per Curt warranty policy when any non-wheeled load (like a bike rack) is installed in the hitch.

If you have a steep driveway entrance you might want to go with a hanging carrier since these tend to extend to the rear of the car less than platform styles. Also, even if you only need to transport 3 bikes, a 4- or 5-bike rack can make loading the bikes much easier.

A great option is the Yakima RidgeBack 4 Bike Rack # Y02458 which is shown in the linked video. This rack include a lock for the rack, tilts away for better vehicle access, features dual arms for gentle support of the bikes. Construction is steel and it comes fully assembled.
