Trailer Hitch and Extender Recommendation for a 4 inch Bumper on RV
Question:
I have a 5th wheel trailer with a 4inch bumper that I want to add a 2inch hitch on. Something like the Curt E-100. I will also need an extender to clear my spare tire, probably 14. This will only be used for a custom cargo carrier that I am having made large enough to hold my fishing cart, so it will be a little heavier than a normal carrier. I will not be towing. I am guessing the carrier itself weighs 75 lbs and loaded with equipment maybe 200-250 pounds. What product recommendations would you make? Is the Curt E-100 the best option? Most durable extender?

Expert Reply:
The Curt hitch part # E-100 will fit a 4 inch square RV bumper like what you have on your fifth wheel and has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity.
The thing about using extenders is that they reduce the hitch capacity by 50 percent. So you would only have 175 lbs of capacity with the # E-100 and an extender like part # C45795.
You also will need to determine what the capacity is for your bumper as well and be sure not to exceed half of it's weight rating with the weight of what you plan to carry.
