Trailer Hitch for a 2011 Mazda 2 for a Bike Carrier
Question:
I want to buy a hitch for my Mazda 2, a 2011. I have a bike carrier that works with with class2. Will these class 1 hitches work? Or do they have that silly stop to prevent class 2?

Expert Reply:
Trailer hitch # C11073 does not have the stop in the shank to prevent the installation of Class II accessories. The stop on other issues is a safety feature that prevents someone from accidently overloading the hitch.
Also, on a Class I hitch, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum. This is because of the additional distance a 3rd and subsequent bikes are from the receiver. It puts too much leverage on the hitch and can damage it and the vehicle.
To use your Class II bike carrier you can use Curt hitch # C11073. However, Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements.
