Is Curt Stabilizer Strap 18050 Required for Class I Hitch Bike Rack on 2013 Volkswagen Golf TDI

Question:

The hitchs instructions state that all non-trailer loads applied to this product must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. My question is a two-fold: 1 For a hitch bike rack 1and1/4inch receiver , do I need to use Curt Stabilizer Strap, part number 18050, or similar straps? Any other brand straps? 2 According to the instructions diagram, it looks like the hitch is mounted to the vehicles Frame, which would normally give enough support for a bike rack. But the instructions still call for stabilizing straps, as if the hitch had weaker attachment method, such as to the Underside of the Trunk Area. Is it indeed mounted to the Frame, or to the Underside of the Trunk? Thank you.

Some light-duty Class I hitches such as the Curt # C11498, and the # C11000 that fits your 2013 Volkswagen Golf (as long as it is not the R model), do require use of a stabilizing strap like # 18050 or a similar item on non-trailer loads in order to retain your warranty coverage. Not all Class I hitches have this requirement. Draw-Tite hitch # 24825 can be used without a support strap. You are certainly free to use an alternate strap, such as a ratcheting tie down like # EM34423 or a similar item for which you can find a good anchoring point on the car. Take care to avoid over-tightening.

All hitches for your car will attach to the very same mounting points on the frame. The limitation in hitch capacity for all those offered for your car is a function of the vehicle frame structure.
