Parts Needed to Install Trailer Brake Controller in 2012 Toyota Tundra
Question:
I have a 2012 Toyota Tundra. I have verified the factory pigtail and connector under the drivers kick plate. I have a factory 4 prong adapter under the rear bumper. I need a 7 pin round adapter at the rear as well as a brake controller. What items do I need to make this complete? Thanks

If your 2012 Toyota Tundra has a 4-wire factory brake control port under the kick panel you can use the superb Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller # 90195 along with wiring adapter # 3040-P which plugs in between the two. You'll also need 7-way # 37185 and enough length of duplex wire # 10-2-1 to reach from the passenger compartment through the firewall and to the rear bumper. This wire along with a 40-amp circuit breaker # PK54540 will provide the 12V power to your 7-way and also carry the brake output signal from the P3.
You can test that connector under the kick panel to confirm it is for a brake controller by applying a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to the pins. Ground the tester and apply it to each of the four pins. One pin should have 12V power all the time (this is power for the controller), and one other should have a voltage ONLY when you press the brake pedal and at no other time. If this is what you find, then that connector is indeed for a brake controller. In this case you'll use the P3, harness # 3040-P, # 37185 and the duplex wire.
You also have the option of hardwiring the controller using our # ETBC7 kit, which includes the 7-way, wire, connectors and circuit breaker. In this type of installation, you'll NOT need the wiring adapter # 3040-P. The controller itself and the ETBC7 kit are all you'll need. This installation is NOT tough to do, and it is outlined in the linked article and video. The advantage of using the hardwire kit is that it will work in ANY version of the truck no matter how it is actually equipped. This is my recommendation.
