Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
I have a 2014 jeep grand cherokee Limited with dual exhaust. I was thinking about purchasing an aftermarket hitch and cargo basket to carry a large fishing cooler. Will I have to worry about the exhaust melting the cooler? I will be using this for long road trips and in stand still traffic as well.

For a trailer hitch, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13182. This hitch offers a maximum tongue weight of 750 pounds and is economically friendly.
For a cargo carrier, I recommend the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18151. This carrier has a weight capacity of 500 pounds and has raised side rails to secure your cargo and provide variety of tie down points. The two inch rise of the shank on the carrier helps to increase ground clearance.
You will want to be careful when choosing the cargo that will be loaded on the carrier behind your Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is possible that the heat from the exhaust could damage your cargo. As a general rule, you want your cargo at least 8-9 inches away from the exhaust, and the further away the better. The back of the Curt Cargo Carrier will sit approximately 19 inches away from the exhaust. If the exhaust pipes on your Cherokee point more down than directly out, this will be even better for you.
I have attached a review video of this cargo carrier on a 2014 Grand Cherokee for you.
This cargo carrier does not come with a hitch pin and clip. If you need one, I recommend the etrailer Receiver Lock # e98882 or the Lets Go Aero Anti-Rattle Receiver Lock # 63232.
If you need cargo straps to secure your cooler or other cargo, I recommend these Erickson Ratchet Tie Down Straps # E01418 that have a working load limit of 300 pounds
