What seems to happen is if the 5th wheel trailer is towed nose up in the front, more weight is put on the tires. Since the axles are rated for a total of 12,000 pounds, that is under the gross vehicle rating of 14,000 pounds. So if there isn't at least 2,000 pounds pin weight at the front the trailer tires will be overloaded, get hot, and that is what is leading to the failure.

Also, make sure the tires are always inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. Trailer tires have a thick sidewall to handle vertical load and if under inflated that thicker sidewall will generate excessive heat.

Going with a higher capacity tire can also help since the ply rating is higher. The highest capacity we have in size 235/80-16 is going to be # TTWTRTM2358016E rated for 3,520 pounds on non-dually applications. (Dually applications, which would be 4 tires per axle, have a 3,000 pound per tire capacity.)

At 3,520 pounds at 80 psi per tire the capacity is more than enough for the axles. Please note that you are still limited to the axle capacities.

If you have enough clearance you can con with a slightly larger 235/85-16 tire, # TTWPRG235R16, rated for 4,400 pounds at 110 psi. It will be 0.7 inches taller but it carries a higher ply rating so it will be stronger. But again you will be limited to the axle capacity.
