Recommended Parts for Installation of Trailer Brake Controller in 2007 Toyota Highlander
Question:
I have a 2007 Toyota highlander that has the factory tow package. We just installed a hitch and 7 pin harness so we could rent a pop-up trailer, but did not get a brake controller stupid, I know. So, I have seen that some vehicles have an extra plug under the dash, which would allow a simple plug-in process for a controller. Is this the case with the highlander or does it need extensive hard-wiring?

Your 2007 Toyota Highlander is not one of the trucks for which a brake controller connection port is provided under the dash. This just means your brake controller installation will be hardwired and require use of our brake controller installation kit # ETBC7. This handy kit includes the 7-way, connectors, wiring, circuit breakers - everything you need to install a brake controller like the outstanding Prodigy P2 # 90885.
Installing the ETBC7 kit is not difficult and you can see the process in the linked article and video. The video shows installation in a 2010 Highlander.
If you already have and installed 7-way # 30717 then you can keep the one included in the kit as a spare in case of damage or corrosion to the original. Exposed connectors can suffer corrosion from the elements so its good insurance to have a spare around.
